How much pallet racking do I need?
Working out pallet positions, beam heights and aisle widths.
Start with how many pallets you need to store at peak, then add around 10 to 15 percent for growth. Each pallet position holds one pallet.
Your clear height (to the lowest obstruction such as lights or sprinklers) sets how many beam levels you can fit. Your forklift's lift height must reach the top beam.
Aisle width depends on the truck: counterbalance forklifts need about 3.5 to 4 m, reach trucks about 2.8 m, and very narrow aisle trucks about 1.8 m.
Racking should be installed by a competent installer and inspected at least once a year.
Common questions
How often should racking be inspected?
At least every 12 months by a competent person, with regular in-house checks in between.
Do I need a load notice?
Yes. Each run of racking should show its safe working loads.
