How much does forklift hire cost in the UK?
Typical UK forklift hire prices by day, week and long-term contract, what is included, and how to keep the cost down.
Forklift hire prices in the UK depend on the type of truck, how much it needs to lift, and how long you need it. The figures below are typical published rates from UK hire companies, excluding VAT. Your own quotes may be higher or lower depending on your site and location.
Short-term hire (days or weeks) A standard counterbalance forklift on short-term hire typically costs around £100 to £160 a day. Many hire companies charge a minimum of one week, so a one-day hire and a five-day hire can cost the same. Ask about this before you book.
Weekly rates Smaller forklifts usually cost between £65 and £250 a week. Larger or more specialised machines, such as rough terrain forklifts, sideloaders or high-capacity trucks, can cost £250 to £800 or more a week.
Long-term contract hire On contracts of six months or more, weekly rates fall sharply. Long-term contracts can start from around £50 to £70 a week for a standard truck, usually with servicing included.
What affects the price Lift capacity: a 1.5 tonne truck costs less than a 5 tonne one. Fuel type: electric suits indoor work, diesel suits yards and outdoor work, LPG works in both. Specialist trucks: reach trucks, order pickers, rough terrain and multi-directional forklifts cost more. Attachments: side-shifts, rotators, fork extensions and clamps can add to the weekly rate. Delivery and collection: often charged separately, especially for short hires. Hire length: the longer the hire, the lower the weekly rate.
What is normally included Most hire rates include routine maintenance, breakdown cover and a current thorough examination report. Fuel or charging, the operator and damage caused in use are usually not included. Check the damage terms before the truck arrives.
Operators and training Most forklift hire is self-drive, so you supply a trained operator. There is no forklift licence in the UK, but operators must be trained and authorised in line with HSE guidance. Some suppliers can provide a truck with a driver for an extra charge.
How to keep the cost down Be specific about the load weight, lift height and ground conditions so you are not quoted for a bigger truck than you need. Compare several quotes, because rates vary between suppliers and regions. HandlingQuote passes your enquiry to no more than four suitable local suppliers, free and with no obligation.
